THE GREAT WRESTLING ROAD TRIP

On August 12-14, we traversed the state of Virginia to see how many men we could get to wrestle on the spot. From truck stops to the beach, car washes to a county fair, we hit as many places as we could.

So how did it go? You'll have to wait and see when the STRONGHOLD documentary is done! This was one of the final shoots.

I can tell you one thing, it was a topic that turned heads, got smiles, and well, the guys at the bars loved us. Now noone can say that I didn't go above and beyond to make a good film. Let me tell you though, I am f*cking exhausted. I need to sleep. Sleeper hold anyone?

How many total strangers did we get to wrestle?

WRESTLING ROAD TRIP!!!

There is no better way to figure out the pulse of America than getting out on the highway and interviewing people at every turn and side road. In two weeks I will be making a final shoot for the STRONGHOLD documentary with a renowned cameraman/producer to see how many men we can get to wrestle on the spot, or at least talk about it. Today I went out and did some location scouting for our trip, and nabbed this interview with two men at an Indian Trading Post. I also set up an interview with several guys at a tattoo place, and they said they'll even wrestle on camera! Awwwwwesome.

I've done many street interviews for the film, even pulled guys out of bars to wrestle on camera, all to prove that many men think alike regardless of sexuality.

Stay tuned...

Okie Chokie

Here is a still from one of the many hot wrestling clips in the STRONGHOLD documentary that I shot at the 2006 Okie Rumble. You may know Mark(top) and Von (bottom). Here Mark demonstrates a front sleeper in all of its air-chokin' breath-controllin' glory. Did you know that choking and strangling were popular holds in Ancient Greek wrestling? Isn't it beautiful!

Read an entire article on it, entitled "Submission Fighting and the Rules of Ancient Greek Wrestling."

Say What?

I've dreaded working on this short little fun piece for the documentary for a long time, because I knew I'd have to listen to..............ahh, can't tell you. It would spoil it! Hmmm, who am I on the phone with? Did the conversation make me happy?

Actually, it did. Twice.

U.S. Men's Olympic Volleyball Team Short Shorts

This came at the most opportune moment, as I was trying to figure out a way to end a segment in the documentary about people having a problem with short shorts, etc. This is my response.

Airport Pick-up

One of the many ways that I find guys to wrestle, holding up signs like this at an airport baggage claim. Actually, this is how I greeted one of the people that I interviewed for the STRONGHOLD documentary. I got several smiles as I stood there for about ten minutes holding the sign, and even got a shout-out from a wrestling fan. You see, it's OK to let people know you like wrestling, we are all very much the same.

Beckham Bar Guy Boxing and Boners

Ok, I don't even know how to start talking about this, but here goes. Last Saturday I made my bi-monthly trek to a local bar (no, not a gay bar) and when I walked in, there was the hottest guy, muscled, tall, awesome face and body. He looked a lot like David Beckham (pictured) but better. I thought, if there was anyone in that bar I would love to talk about wrestling with, it was him. I've done it many times, talked to hot guys at bars about wrestling, but I was a little scared to talk to him that night. I guess I'm out of practice.

Anyyyyways, as the night wore on, and I downed a couple of beers and made my way across the street to another bar, he showed up there too. So I finally got the courage and walked up to him with my usual line "Hi, can I ask you a question? I'm working on a documentary on wrestling and I was wondering if you wrestled or like wrestling?"

Well, wow! Not only did he talk and hang with me most of the night, he was from Ireland and had a deep Irish accent. Very polite, and not threatening at all. He said he liked boxing mostly, but also watched UFC. But the story gets better.

He and some of his friends left for about an hour to watch a boxing Pay-Per-View on TV, then returned. He told me about the bout, and after taking a swig of his drink, he said "Man, I got a boner now from watching that." It came out of nowhere, and it didn't even hit me for a few seconds what he just said. I think I immediately said something about guys getting boners wrestling, but it was loud and we were getting so intoxicated it didn't seem like a big revelation, or anything shocking.

Anyways, people may want to see what he said as a come on, but that's not the case from what I felt (unless I'm dense). He was talking to chicks and hoping to be noticed, but spent the rest of the night hanging with me. At one point my half-filled cup of beer slipped out of my hand, and he immediately jumped to the floor to pick up the glass so I would not feel embarrassed. Such a gentleman.

In the meantime, three brothers were walking around celebrating one brother's 24th birthday. The birthday guy kept putting his arms around me and thanking me for saying "Hey John, Happy Birthday!" every time I saw him. I kept putting his intoxicated skin-head brother in a headlock all night because he told me he likes to choke people out. It seemed he wanted to do something, wrestle maybe, but many of these guys aren't like us. They are feeling the masculine rush, but are unsure how to go about getting what they want from a stranger, like me. Everytime the drunk younger brother walked by me, I'd say in a low tone, I wanna wrestle you.

Eventually after sobering up with water, and the night was ending, my Irish stud had to leave with his friends. I left soon after. He said he would definitely call me about the film, but that was a week ago. No call yet. These are the kinds of things that happen to me all the time, and if ONLY a camera could catch them, what a film that would be. I will do my best to get him in an interview if I see him again!

Beowulf is a Babe!

Ok, I am going to admit it right up front. I want to roll around naked with an animated character. Have you seen the movie Beowulf? Not only is the lead character handsome as hell, but he spends most of the movie shirtless, even fighting off monsters naked. Man oh man, would I like to be his bedside boy and heroic sidekick. I definitely suggest watching this movie, if only for the man himself.

Four Years of Footage

It's been four years of shooting for the STRONGHOLD wrestling documentary, and I know I am getting closer to completing the film when I am finally using up the wrestling footage I shot for it. Most of the work on the film has been determining the structure, what I wanted to cover, and how to best present it. The on-camera interviews serve as the framework, and the visuals and wrestling footage are put on top of and in between the talking later. That's when the film comes to life even more.

The pic above is from the pro wrestling show at Hillside 2004. These people have probably forgotten about it and moved on to other things, but seeing stuff like this every day keeps it fresh in my mind. I am living in a time warp, but I don't care. Look at them awesome bodies!

During filming, my inner voice was constantly saying "use that","Oh yes, you gotta use that somewhere!", "That was a good shot, gotta find a place for it." Now those places are being found. Of course I am sure that I won't be using all of the great wrestling footage, so you can be sure it will be on an extra DVD when the documentary comes out.

OK, now I have to go back to looking at thick-legged hot guys squeezing each other to death. Anyone wanna help?

STRONGHOLD Documentary Exceeds Two Hours

Today, for the first time, I took all of the edited and semi-edited pieces that will make up the STRONGHOLD wrestling documentary and put them on the timeline together to get a good feel for the flow and length. As you may know, I have been filming and editing this documentary since April 2004. Yeah, it's been four long years in the making. Padding space for some yet unedited pieces, it came to a whopping 2 1/2 hours long! And I know I have probably forgotten a clip here or there.

So this is good thing, because I can finally for the first time sit down and watch it from the great opening scene to the ending. It also forces me to trim and shorten pieces, get to the point, and make use of some of the ideas that I've had since the beginning. I want the documentary to not only be about what I discovered about wrestling, but also the journey in making it. My goal is to keep it under 2 hours, but if it keeps a good pace and stays interesting, I wouldn't mind a 2:10 documentary. There's a lot to talk about!

Whatever the final length, there will ultimately be A LOT of good stuff to fit on the Extras DVD of the 2-disc set. For now, it's back to editing! Vic

Contacting a Childhood Bully

Many of us had them, some of us were them. But did you ever wonder what happened to your childhood bullies (or victims)?

Two days I ago, I decided to google a few names I remembered from the past when doing research on aggression. Tim was this young, good-looking kid with deep inset eyes that used to whip snowballs at me a few times while I walked home in 7th grade. My friend John, who ironically was also friends with Tim, used to protect me. I fought back with another bully, Ricky, and actually flipped him over my shoulder once. He wanted to be good friends after that. But Tim was this kinda guy that seemed to be looking for a fight, and man, if I could go back in time, I would have loved to wrestle him. He was hot.

Well, by pure coincidence, I tracked him down via the web, and we exchanged emails all day today---even spoke on the phone. He didn't really remember much of it, but said he was an angry kid cause he had five brothers and needed to stand out. Wouldn't it be something if I wrestled him in the film? He is 43 now, and a 220 lb correctional officer, and even has grand-kids! Below are a few excerpts from our email exchanges:

Tim:

As far as the bully thing goes, I am ashamed for that. I have no idea what made me act that way. I now am employed with New York state as a corrections officer, 20 1/2 years. I turned down a promotion as Sgt. I'm married with two kids, 21yrs old (girl) and 19 yrs old (boy). I have two grand kids 2 1/2 and 2 weeks old. I gained 28 lbs my first two years as a correction officer and I'm now at 220,:(. I started the job at 164 not an ounce of fat on me. I can no longer stand kids who act the way I did. I'm am truly sorry for anything mean I may have done to you. I hope you can forgive me.

Me:

Damn, now how am I supposed to challenge and win a wrestling match over my childhood bully when he has 50 lbs on me and is a trained correctional officer! I got pretty strong legs, so I may be able to take you. If it makes you feel better, I don't feel bad about it. I actually thought you were pretty cool.

Tim:
Oh don't worry about taking me I think you got me wooped. I do like the cage fighting, ufc.

Then we talked on the phone for about 30 minutes. It was great. Sounds like this could happen. I'll keep you posted. V
